Public hearing on Plastics Strategy


Today, the European Economic and Social Committee is holding a hearing on the EU Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy.  The event will be followed by a theatre performance and an art exhibition will be held in parallel, displaying sculptures made out of plastic waste.  Although registrations have closed, the programme is available on the link below.  FIEC is currently working on a document on the strategy, for its members.

New website for SMEs to better understand and apply EU consumer rights


On 21st March, the European Commission launched the “Consumer Law Ready” site. Via this website, businesses will be able to obtain training, through online programmes, sign up to online courses and seek expert advice.
They will be able to receive consumer law training on guarantees, on consumers’ right of cancellation, on information to be provided to customers, on alternative dispute settlement options and on how to avoid unfair business practices.
Through online guides, videos, quizzes and e-tests, businesses in all EU Member States will be able to navigate through complex European consumer legislation. 
The project, financed and managed by the European Commission, is implemented by the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), in partnership with EUROCHAMBRES, the Association of the European Chambers of Commerce, and UEAPME, the European Association of Craft, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.

3rd revision of the "Carcinogens" Directive


On 5/4/2018 the European Commission presented a proposal for a further revision of the “Carcinogens” Directive (2004/37/EC). This time, it proposes the inclusion of limit values in annex III of the Directive for 5 additional substances, namely : 

  • Cadmium
  • Beryllium
  • Arsenic acid and its salts,
  • Formaldehyde
  • 4,4'-Methylene-bis(2-chloroaniline)

FIEC will check the relevance of these substances for the construction process and, if needed, undertake the appropriate initiatives.
